Positive Psychology and The Brain

People who have a brain full of hope and not pessimism, have a brain that is proactive:  It ACTS on the world and experience and does not remain passive to everything that ACTS on it. The positive brain has its focus on health and not illness; it experiences joy more than sorrow; it is full of gratitude to everyone and everything; it demonstrates resilience to stress; can cope and handle challenges.  Positive people manifest certain characteristics and have certain aspects that describe a hopeful brain.  In medical situations, the hopeful patient responds to pain, fatigue, anxiety, and adversity more adequately.  In these patients, when hope is increased and elevated, patients recover quicker.

The characteristics of hopeful people are that they have better strategies for dealing with life and people; they show motivation; belief; feel personal power; have positive moods; have good impulse control; practice self-care; approach their health in a positive way and used good self-care.

The hopeful brain shows restraint; emotional regulation; controls stress and the body; has social intelligence; displays positive emotions. To create hope in a patient, chronic pain, fatigue, and anxiety will be reduced. Methods for achieving these are to practice loving-kindness meditations and use mindfulness therapies.  To cultivate hope mastery must be taught; strengths must be validated; the person must be freed from imprisoning beliefs; must learn to make good decisions; and learn to deal with emotionally challenging relationships
