Prayer and the Brain

Neuroscientists have been studying the effects on the brain during prayer or meditation. In physical terms, the area of the brain involved with meditation and prayer turn from red to yellow when the subject is meditating or praying. The brain’s neurotransmitters are also positively affected. The brain controls all bodily and psychological functions such as mood, heart rate, blood pressure and the overall immune system. Prayer can have a healing, therapeutic effect on the entire brain-body-mind system. The brain changes with anything and everyone that the subject interacts with in the environment. This is a new area of brain study called neurotheology.  In fact, anything the person focuses on can change the brain for good or bad.  People can sculpt their brains with experience and training.  The brain is a very flexible and changeable organ.  This is called neuroplasticity.
